About Ayurveda

Healing that honors each individual as truly unique and aims to find and remove the root cause of dis-ease in the body, mind and spirit.

We are a microcosm of the macrocosm and everything in the universe is a unique combination of the five great elements — space, air, water, fire and earth.

These elements form three biological energies, or doshas, that inform our physiology and psychology. They each contain all five elements, but predominant in two elements giving rise to their function:

Vata: Space + Air
Movement — voluntary and involuntary

Pitta: Water + Fire
Transformation — digestion, metabolism and assimilation

Kapha: Water + Earth
Form — structure, lubrication and cohesion

Ayurveda's Definition of Health:

Sama dosha sama agnischa sama dhatu mala kriyaaha |
Prasanna atma indriya manaha swastha iti abhidheeyate ||
—Sushruta Samhita

One is in perfect health when the three doshas, (vata, pitta and kapha), digestive fire (digestion, assimilation and metabolism), all the body tissues (dhatus), all the excretory functions are in perfect order with a pleasantly disposed and contented mind, senses and spirit.
